      Cuba 2002

I visited Cuba for 3 weeks in 2002. Rather than visiting a tourist paradise of somewhere like Varadero, I wanted to see the real Cuba, so I travelled with a small group around the whole island. We visited Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Vinales, Remedios, Trinidad, Cienfuegos and Camaguey. Highlights of the trip included visiting the pre-revolution hideout of Fidel Castro in the Sierra Maestra, seeing the UNESCO restoration work in Trinidad, eating Lobster and fried Banana in a Paladare, having Salsa lessons (and a fantastic display of their dancing) from our hotel staff in Remedios and cooling down afterwards with the best Mojitos we tasted in the whole of Cuba.

Cuba is a really fascinating county to visit, in most places a real step back in time. If you love great music, friendly people, beautiful scenery and really want to see something different then Cuba is for you.

Just a couple of tips - if you get the chance to eat in a Paladare take it - the food in these places beats that in the hotels every time, and once it gets dark take a look at the sky - the view of the stars is pretty special, particularly if you normally live in a big city.
